House broadens what counts as clean energy in Michigan
Michigan utilities and developers would have a wider menu of qualifying technologies under the state's clean energy standard if a House-passed measure becomes law.
The bill (HB 4007), sponsored by Rep. Bohnak of the Upper Peninsula, expands the definition of a clean energy system in the 2008 statute that governs Michigan's energy portfolio. Backers say the current definition leaves out generation that produces low or zero carbon emissions and shouldn't, and that a broader list will help meet 2040 carbon-free targets without relying solely on wind and solar. Critics warn the wider net could dilute renewable goals.
After more than three months in committee, the House adopted a substitute and passed the bill 82 to 27 on Roll Call No. 91 on May 6 with immediate effect. The Senate received it on May 12 and referred it to the Committee on Government Operations.
The bill remains in the Senate.
