About Midwest Safety News
Civic accountability journalism for Indiana, Kentucky and Minnesota.
No one in America is more committed to government transparency than Midwest Safety.
First it was police body camera footage. We helped Americans see what was actually happening in interactions with law enforcement.
Now it is state and local government. Midwest Safety News lets readers see at a glance what their elected officials are doing in real time. Without commentary. In a way that is easy to understand. And best of all, without ads.
What we cover
We track state legislation, local government meetings and government budgets across 3 states: Indiana, Kentucky and Minnesota. We watch every bill that advances out of committee in Indianapolis, Frankfort and St. Paul. We watch the city councils and county boards covering more than four million residents. We surface what gets reported in shrinking local newsrooms only sometimes if at all.
Our coverage area at launch is 28 city and county governing entities plus the three state legislatures. We expand from there as we have the capacity to do so honestly.
Founder and staff
Midwest Safety News was founded by Alex Smith, who continues to run the long-running Midwest Safety project covering police body camera footage. Each state on this site is covered by a dedicated correspondent who reviews and edits every story published under that beat.
