Minnesota House passes bill to protect public employee whistleblowers

By Alex Smith

A House bill (HF23) has passed through the Minnesota House of Representatives and is now headed to the Senate for further consideration. The legislation aims to provide clearer definitions and enhanced protections for whistleblowers among public employees, as outlined in its title "Whistleblower definitions provided and whistleblower protections for public employees modified."

The bill seeks to clarify what constitutes whistleblowing and ensure that public employees who report misconduct are protected from retaliation. It includes provisions that could help prevent the silencing of individuals who expose wrongdoing within government agencies.

Chief sponsor Representative Robbins has led the effort, with 26 co-sponsors including Allen and Altendorf. The legislation received strong support in the House, passing through multiple readings and amendments before its final approval.

Now that HF23 has passed the House, it will be reviewed by the Senate Judiciary and Public Safety committee for further consideration. If approved by the Senate, the bill would then proceed to the Governor's desk for potential signing into law.
