Michigan SB 729 passes both chambers, heads to governor for signature
Michigan SB 729 has passed both chambers of the Legislature and is now heading to the governor for consideration. Sponsored by Sen. Sean McCann, the bill amends Section 8 of 1964 PA 183 to provide an exception to the limit on outstanding obligations of the State Building Authority, which sets a cap on the total debt the authority may carry at any one time.
The bill's most recent Senate vote, recorded Dec. 9, 2025, was 25-10 with two members excused. On May 14, 2026, the House moved the bill through a compressed floor process: the chamber suspended its rules, approved a motion to discharge the bill from committee, placed it on second reading, amended it, advanced it to third reading and then placed it on immediate passage before reading it a third time and sending it forward (source: https://openstates.org/mi/bills/2025-2026/SB729/).
The bill now goes to the governor, whose signature or veto will determine its fate.
