Michigan HB 5797 passes both chambers, heads to governor for signature

By Alex Smith

Michigan HB 5797 has passed both chambers of the Legislature and was presented to the governor on May 21, 2026. The bill would revise the state's school aid law to create an exception to the minimum days of pupil instruction requirement when schools are closed due to inclement weather.

The bill was sponsored by Rep. Parker Fairbairn along with eight co-sponsors. The Senate passed the measure on May 20, 2026, by a vote of 33-2, with two members excused, after the chamber suspended its rules to place the bill on immediate passage. The Senate reported the bill favorably from the Committee of the Whole without amendments before returning it to the House (source: https://openstates.org/mi/bills/2025-2026/HB5797/).

The bill is now before the governor, who may sign or veto it. The Senate vote included a roll call granting immediate effect, meaning the law would take effect immediately upon the governor's signature if that provision is upheld.
