World homicide rates

Murders per 100,000 people for about 200 countries, with the trend over the last five reported years. The numbers come from the UN Office on Drugs and Crime by way of the World Bank. Countries report on different schedules, so every figure shows its year. Click any country for its full trend.

# ranks countries with current data and 300,000+ people, matching the lists above; small and late-reporting countries show — but stay sortable. Every figure is from that country's latest reported year (the Year column; red means older than the rank gate). YoY compares the two most recent back-to-back reported years; green means murders fell. Percent swings run wild for tiny countries, so set a population filter when sorting by trend. Deaths are estimates (rate × population). — means no data.

All countries · safest to highest rate · year shown when older than 2023

68 more countries and territories have no homicide data in this source for recent years.

Countries with older data

These countries last reported more than two data years ago, so they sit out the rankings. Their last reported figure is shown for history, not as news.

Methodology

Counts follow the UNODC definition of intentional homicide: an unlawful death inflicted on a person with the intent to cause death or serious injury. War deaths are not homicides under this definition. We pull the series from the World Bank's mirror of UNODC data (indicator VC.IHR.PSRC.P5), which updates as countries report.

Countries report on different schedules. Most are one to three years behind and a few stop earlier, so every figure on this page carries its year. A country ranks only if it reported within two years of the newest data anywhere (2023). Older countries are listed separately above. Year-over-year change is shown only when the two most recent reported years are back to back, because a gap makes any percent change misleading.

Countries under 300,000 people stay on the map and in the directory but sit out the top-10 lists. At that size one case can swing the whole rate.

Death counts are estimates. UNODC publishes the rate; we multiply it by each country's population for the same year. The world average counts every person the same rather than every country, so big countries move it more. The typical country sits well below it.

Our U.S. state pages will not match this page exactly. The state pages use CDC death certificates and show 6.8 per 100,000 for 2023. This page uses UNODC's figure of 5.8 for the same year, which is built on FBI police data. Police files and death certificates count a bit differently and both are legitimate.

Venezuela's official numbers are widely seen as undercounts and carry a † note. Taiwan does not appear because the World Bank mirror does not include it. On the map, bars cap at the 90th percentile so a few extreme countries don't flatten the rest.
