Methodology
AAA's Daily Fuel Gauge Report publishes a true statewide average retail price for regular grade gasoline in every state and DC, drawn from credit-card and fleet transactions at stations nationwide. AAA is the gas-price benchmark most widely cited across U.S. news. We read the statewide regular-grade average once a week.
AAA reports a current reading rather than a back-history, so the weekly trend line builds out over time as we record each week's number. The U.S. national line is seeded from federal weekly data so the year-over-year figure is available right away.
"YTD change" is the percent change from the first weekly reading on or after January 1 to the most recent reading. "4-week change" is the percent change from four weeks prior. "Vs national" is the difference in dollars per gallon between the state average and the U.S. national average for the same week.
